Firstly, it is a study to know in a deeper way what are the: Difficulties in the pronunciation of English vowels by the fifth-year students from Modern Languages major at the Foreign Language Department of the University of El Salvador during the year 2014. Secondly, Pronouncing English vowel sounds is one of the most challenging tasks for students. The experience with our native language affects our perception of nonnative speech sounds in a systematic, predictable manner. English uses the same writing system as Spanish a,e,i,o,u but instead of having a one-to-one correspondence between grapheme and pronunciation, the five written vowels, in combination or alone, represent twelve phonemes in stressed syllables /i, ɪ , e, ɛ , æ, a, ɔ , ʌ , o, ʊ , u, ə /. This study pretends to analyze those phonetic difficulties when pronouncing English pair of vowels for example: /i-ɪ / feel-fill, /e-ɛ / chase-chess, /ʊ -u/ full-fool, / a- ɛ / bar-bear, / æ- ʌ /cap-cup, /ɛ - ʌ / bet-butt /o- ɔ / bowl-ball and / æ- a- ʌ / hat-hot-hut, trying to focus in those which are more difficult at the moment of pronouncing them correctly. In addition, this research will focus on the pronunciation of some long and short vowel sounds and the perception of the sound schwa /ə/. Thirdly, the methodology chosen to be applied in this study will allow the researchers to know the difficulties in the pronunciation of English vowels by students. Exploratory research is characterized by its flexibility in study development, which fits perfectly in this investigation since there is not another study previously established. Indeed, it offers the feasibility of generating a series of hypotheses or questions toward the problem. Also, while a mixed research is taking place, involving the mixing of quantitative and qualitative research methods, approaches, or other paradigm characteristics. A nonexperimental research will be done; the information will not be manipulated. Apparently, it is an activity that is normal and easy but also can be complex and a challenging process when it is done in a foreign language. Students who learn English as a foreign language sometimes can find it difficult to produce in an accurate form. So, this research has been centered in the differences of English writing proficiency between Adults and Teens program from the twentieth level of the English morning and afternoon regular courses at Centro de Enseñanza de Idiomas Extranjeros de la Universidad de El Salvador (CENIUES) as well as to know about the current errors students present when writing. In chapter one, it is stated the problem, the objectives, (general and specific), research questions and justification that are the basis to carry out this research. Chapter two is about antecedents of the institution, theoretical framework concerned to the objectives stated for this study, hypothesis and variables involved in this matter. Chapter three deals with the methodological design used by researchers over Adults and Teens students from the twentieth level of the English morning and afternoon regular courses at Centro de Enseñanza de Idiomas Extranjeros de la Universidad de El Salvador (CENIUES) in which it is specified the type of study, research design, population, sampling and the techniques used in order to get data. Chapter four contains the data analysis and its interpretation. Here it is presented the results obtained from the written composition task made by teens and adults of the twentieth level at CENIUES. Also, it is given some conclusions and recommendations to students, teachers and the institution to be taken into consideration to improve this area. In fact, based on native speakers, it is considered the third most spoken language in the world according to the latest editions of The Encyclopaedia Britannica yearbook, and Ethnologue: languages of the world (2014) .But it remains in the first place as the most learned language with 1,500 million English learners. Due to this importance of English in our globalized world, the University of El Salvador created the Department of Foreign Languages in 1956 including the English Teaching Language major in 1977 (Modified in 1999) and the Modern Languages major in 20021. One of the main purposes of the students for these majors is to have a complete knowledge of the four language skills, which are the following: listening, speaking, writing and reading. The present work will be focused on the last skill mentioned and its development on reading comprehension by using the basic reading techniques learned during the Readings and Conversation I course. It is important to remark that even though reading is simply defined as the act of reading3. Reading comprehension is a complex process. The process through which the interaction of the reader’s background knowledge, the information inferred by the written language, and the reading situation context is constructing meaning from text (Dutcher, 1990).
