Abstract
The practice of translation is both an art and a discipline that requires precision, adaptability, and the ability to bridge linguistic and cultural differences. As Newmark (1988) explains, “translation is a craft consisting in the attempt to replace a written message and/or statement in one language by the same message and/or statement in another language” (p. 7). It takes time and practice to develop the fundamental techniques and methods of translation. Besides, the combination of traditional linguistic strategies with modern tools is crucial to help translators increase their productivity and improve consistency (Bowker, 2002, p.1).A significant part of this work involved the translation of images and official documents, such as birth and marriage certificates, for which the exploration of different techniques and tools proved essential to provide clear and accurate translations. Some of these techniques will be discussed and exemplified in the sections that follow.
Throughout the development of this portfolio, a balance between fidelity to the original text and clarity for the target audience was required. Eugene Nida argues that “the translation should aim to reproduce the meaning in the receptor language as naturally as possible” (Nida, 2021, p.159), a principle that guided the process of ensuring meaning was conveyed without loss of precision.
This work reflects on translation in its multiple forms, demonstrating how theoretical knowledge and practical application merge. Garcia (2015) reminds us that “machine translation post-editing is no longer a marginal practice, but a common one, demanding that translators adapt their skills to a new technological environment” (p. 20). For that reason, this portfolio presents the original versions of the documents, as well as their respective translations, where the application of techniques and tools is evidenced.
