Abstract

The current research project was focused on the use of authentic materials in the Readings and Conversation II courses offered in the B.A in Modern Languages: Specialization in French and English, and in the B.A in English Teaching of the Foreign Language Department at the University of Salvador, Semester I-2018. The purpose of the research project was to analyze if the students are exposed to authentic materials so that they can develop their macro language skills and if the use of authentic materials in these courses have an impact on their language. Second and Foreign Language theories say that student ́s exposure to more authentic, real-life material for input in the classroom generates better learning in a new language. Providing learners with input “a bit beyond (their) current level of competence (i+1)” that can be understood “with the help of context or extra-linguistic knowledge” enables them to acquire the underlying structures (Krashen, 1982). During the development of the research, the team administered a survey to the students of Readings and Conversation II courses, as well as a questionnaire was administered to some of the teachers of the course. A checklist was used in the observation of some classes during the period of four weeks. All the instruments mentioned above helped the research team to gather data in order to make a final report of the use of authentic materials in the Readings and Conversation II courses offered in the B.A in Modern Languages: Specialization in French and English, and in the B.A in English Teaching of the Foreign Language Department at the University of El Salvador, Semester I-2018
