Item The teacher student relationship effects on student's attitudes toward language learning(2009-01-01) Cañas Hernández, Alma Verónica; Gutiérrez Avelar, Reina del Carmen; Menjívar Mira, Leticia del Carmen; Santos Guevara, Elías Alexander; Glower de Alvarado, Ana maría; Franco Ramos, RhinaTeaching and teachers from all fields are attributed with diverse kinds of characteristics that must exist in all of those whose purpose is to warrant an effective learning in students. It is concerning to this, that ESL Teachers not only need to have some previous academic knowledge in pedagogy, but also they have to reflect on their personality when teaching for achieving a more effective learning outcome and being able to deal with different students’ needs and nature. The essence of this bibliographical research is to present the interest and concern about effects on students’ attitudes toward language learning influenced by teacher-student relationship. Likewise, this research overlooks many cognitive theorists such as: Brophy J.Good and Pianta Robert C., who argue that “learning is a social event and their studies claim the importance for teachers to avoid neglecting to form emotionally warm, supportive relationships with and among their students.” It is crucial to recognize that every teacher has his or her own teaching style which provides, in most of the cases, an agreeable learning environment for students; understanding that a positive learning environment must be one in which school staff and students build interactions in which people feel accepted, respected and where learning is the main focus, by overcoming challenges and changes at the moment of teaching students.Item Multiple intelligences and humanistic theories on foreign languaje teaching-learning process(2009-05-01) Juárez Hernández, Angélica Esperanza; Molina Rosales, Ana Virginia; Carranza Campos, Miguel Ángel; Franco Ramos, RhinaHow do human beings learn? Are there certain basic principles of learning that apply to all learning situations? Is one theory of learning better than another? The concern of this work is about the study of learning theories, particularly multiple intelligences and humanistic theories. These new trends in learning argue that there is more than one way to learn, more than one way to be “intelligent”. Besides that, they explain that learning is influenced not only by cognitive but also affective and linguistic factors. These processes involve how learners process knowledge through mental and intellectual capacities, and how their feeling and attitudes influence the learning process. Traditional theories of learning all attempt to describe Universal human traits in learning. They explain globally rather than individually the differences across individuals in the way they learn. Today, the most significant discoveries last trends in learning have made, are those describing that even though, we all display inherently human traits of learning, every individual approaches problems or learns information, perceives, filters, stores and recalls such information from a unique perspective. Multiple Intelligences is a theory which deals with cognitive variations in learning. Besides that, the importance of psychology is being recognized by current theories. Humanistic theory, on the other hand emphasizes that the individual in education is first a human being, then a learner. Therefore, affectivity is a strong factor in determining students’ success. For all this, the integration of multimodal learning approaches and affective factors on foreign language teaching optimize students’ learning process.Item Ethnic tourism in El Salvador(2010-01-01) Contreras granadero, Jessica Xiomara; Hernández Aldana, Catalina Concepción; Pleitez del Cid, EmelEn Abisag; Carranza, Miguel Angel; Franco, RhinaTourism in El Salvador has been leveled in recent years as an industry that can contribute to economic development. This paper tries to give an overview of tourism development from the perspective of Ethnic Tourism, considered as a valuable resource to be incorporated in the tourism field, to search for innovative strategies for promotion and maintenance, whereas sustainable development models provide alternatives to schedule conservation with economic and social aspects that opens tourism. In this paperwork is about the tourism and the importance that this has for the economical situation in El Salvador. Also, Ethnic Tourism is presented as a strategically way for the indigenous groups in the country. All this with the purpose of maintaining the culture and revive the identity of the Salvadoran people. In here, there are different segments like history of tourism in El Salvador, indigenous groups, the role of the society and the government with these peoples and the need to bring to development for these communities. Under this perspective there is the idea that Salvadoran government should give more support to the local indigenous people in order to develop the ethnic tourism in the country.Item Factors related to academic success in students in the 10 th semester in the major of Modern Languages in the University of El Salvador: teachers, resources, administration and students(2010-01-01) Trejo Berríos, Karol Patricia; Martínez Aguilar, Merlin Tatiana; Velásquez Benavides, Ana Cristina; Cruz Cubías, Juan Carlos; Ayala, Edgar NicolásNowadays, learning a foreign language has become an elemental key to be successful as a professional in a society. Therefore the Foreign Languages department in the University of El Salvador has created the major of Modern Languages, specialized in English and French, to cover the demands society brings. This major was implemented in the year 2002 and now it has become one of the most attractive for students. The amount of students increased and the Foreign Languages Department had to face the problem of not counting with enough human and technological resources, as well infrastructure, which has led to various constraints. This brought difficulties to the learners to obtain academic success. Academic success can be defined as the achievement by individuals of objectives related to various types of knowledge and skills. These objectives are socially established based on the age, prior learning and capacity of individuals with regard to education, socialization and qualification. Studies conducted on academic achievement notably focus on student progress and individual, institutional and organizational factors of achievement, along with social relationship interactions that determine, facilitate or hinder academic achievement (CRIRES 2005). But in this research appeared some aspects that were taken into consideration since according to the students they interfered with their academic achievement. The most relevant aspects were divided in four factors: Teachers, Administration, Resources and Students. These were found in the SICEVAES1 (Sistema Centroamericano de Evaluación y Acreditación de la Educación Superior). These factors were not only reinforced with the bibliographic, but also with the information survey results obtained from the students of the tenth semester of Foreign Languages Major. Given the fact that this research is merely bibliographical, only the survey was carried out. All this information will be presented in the following essay.Item The use of the mother tongue (L1) in foreign language classes(2010-01-01) Pérez Pérez, Katya Rebeca; Torres Pérez, Elías Enríque; Navarro Vargas, José Miguel; Franco Ramos, Rhina; Garay Salinas, RicardoLearning a language requires the implementation of different strategies such as the use of the mother tongue (L1) that facilitates learning and teaching in foreign language classrooms. This leads us to two different perspectives on learning a new language: the linguists and researchers that fully support the mother tongue use in foreign language (FL) classes, and the others that support only the target language (L2) in FL contexts for a more effective way of learning and acquiring a foreign language. These two perspectives on learning a target language are widely recognized as “Monolingual Approach” (Krashen, 1981) and “Bilingual Approach” (Auerbach, 1993). The ‘Bilingual Approach’ is currently gaining more support by incorporating the students’ L1 as a learning tool and also as a facilitator for an efficient communication. On the other hand, the ‘Monolingual Approach’ where only L2 is used within the framework of the classroom is regarded as the best way to acquire a foreign language. The exposure to language leads to learning, excluding the students’ L1 for the benefit of maximizing students’ exposure to the L2. These two approaches have been a subject to discussion whether the bilingual or the monolingual approach would fit the learners’ needs and provide a better input in order to improve language accuracy, fluency and clarity to facilitate the procedures of a foreign language learning. According to Kavaliauskiené (2009) the modern trend of teaching languages is “based on the communicative method which emphasizes the teaching of the target language through the target language. However, the idea of abandoning the native tongue is too stressful to many learners, who need a sense of security in the experience of learning a foreign language” (p.22). In the past, methods such the Grammar Translation Method (GTM), were based on the use of L1 in Foreign Language classes, however, the students were unable to speak fluently after having studied the language for a long time. This led to the idea that all use of the mother tongue in the language classrooms should be avoided. In addition, translation has been taught as uncommunicative, boring, pointless, difficult and irrelevant (Harmer, 2001: 131).Item Teaching target language culture: the learning of the target culture is an essential part of learning a foreign language(2010-01-01) Batres González, Jullianny Bayarone; Mercado Tiznado, Karen Eloisa; Ramírez Hernández, Maira Teresa; Hernández Rivas, René Arturo; Franco Ramos, RhinaNowadays, the English language is spread around the world. Many experts agree that teaching language is not just the knowledge of phonology, morphology, syntax, etc.; it is in the context where students can learn the target language. This paper aims at explaining to teachers as well as students why and how culture should be taught. Moreover, the paper explains the interrelationship between language and culture by stating that they are inseparable. Furthermore, it gives an alternative by taking into consideration the possibility of applying the Intercultural Approach (IA), which is a choice for students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to get familiar with the Target Language Culture (TLC). At the end of this paper, the reader will find the current situation of teaching culture in the Foreign Language Department (FLD) of the University of El Salvador (UES). The main objective of this paper is to propose the teaching of target language culture since it helps students to feel empathy and respect towards other peoples’ customs, behaviors, and lifestyles. Also, culture motivates students to learn the language since they become critical and aware of their own culture and; at the same time, they improve their four macroskills too. Finally and most important is that applying culture in language teaching helps students to improve their communicative competence. Item Updating the curriculum of Modern Languages Major(2010-01-01) Perla Sibrián, Susana Elizabeth; Umaña Gómez, Miguel Ángel; Valle Valladares, José Santos; Carranza Campos, Miguel Ángel; Franco, RhinaAs undergraduate students of the Modern Languages Major: French and English offered by the Department of Foreign Languages at the School of Science and Arts of the University of El Salvador and conscious about the importance of reviewing the current curriculum of the Modern Languages Major to offer the students an educational plan which fulfils their job and professional expectations, we present the current research work with the purpose of providing documentary information to the corresponding authorities to help in the decision making concerning the improvement of this major. « Since their introduction, social networks sites (SNSs) such as Myspace, Facebook, Cyworld , and Bebo have attracted millions of users, many of whom have integrates these sites into their daily practices. As of this writing, affordances, supporting a wide range of interests and practices. While their key technological features are fairly consistent, the cultures that emerge around SNSs are varied… Sites also vary in the extent to which they incorporate new information and communication tools, such as mobile connectivity, blogging, photo/video sharing. Item Understanding the learning process of french as a second language by identifying the language skills that represent a challenge for the students and the learning strategies they use to succeed.(2011-06-10) Ulloa López, Rafael Ángel; Chávez Martínez, Ana Sofía; Vargas Gómez, Laura Goretty; Barahona Muñoz, José Victorino; ,This research begins with the premise that strategies are important if students are to learn effectively, and that this applies not only to language but also to any other field of learning. Therefore this study looks into the strategies used by the students from the Modern Languages Major in language skills development, so they could successfully complete their studies in French. The research used a questionnaire to gather the information to apply the quantitative measurement. Besides, this study identifies the strategy patterns by looking into the effects of some individual factors such as gender, learning style, strategy preference in skills and categories of the strategies implemented. The findings highlight the importance in strategy usage for the development of the learning of French and question its effectiveness through the learning process of the individuals. In addition, implications of the findings for the learning situation are discussed. The patterns of strategy used identified in this study may help instructors get better understanding of Modern Languages students‟ performance. The different strategy choices found in this approach also offer some insights into pedagogical practices that can successfully be employed in the French learning contexts. What is the current state of professional development of teachers at the Foreign Language Department of the School of Arts and Sciences of the University of El Salvador(2012-01-01) Landaverde Castro, Violeta Esmeralda; Morales, Fidel Navidad; Garay Salinas, RicardoThis research project has as an aim, to know about the importance of the existence of Professional Development Programs (PDP) at the Foreign Language Department (FLD) of the School of Arts and Sciences of the University of El Salvador (UES) and to know if there was any, what kind of PDP the authorities of the UES implement and offer to the staff of teachers. Professional Development Programs are the bases for fostering performance to improve professional areas, at the present PDP has become a necessity not only for benefit teachers’ continuing education but also the quality of education they transmit to their students. Through the application of a questionnaire to the teachers of the FLD it was found that they agreed in the fact that they know about the existence of those programs and that the PDP implemented by the authorities of the UES are not enough. Besides they acknowledged that they do not offer facilities concerning to schedules and variety of studies. That is why it is important to take into account the real necessities people have. Furthermore, the implementation of PDP can lead to an organization to succeed or to fail according to the interest the authorities show about their employees’ performance and their improvementItem Situación de adolescentes en abandono familiar, casos: Comunidad Oscar Arnulfo Romero y perspectivas de desarrollo (Zaragoza-La Libertad, 2012).(2012-01-01) Anaya, Cecilia Judith; Laínez Recinos, Yancy Carolina; Navarrete, María SantosLa investigación conoció las condiciones sociales y ambientales respecto al desarrollo de habilidades de las adolescentes en abandono bajo acogimiento institucional, para analizar de una manera más amplia este problema.
