A comparative study of the english speaking proficiency of the 4th year students from the B.A. in Modern Languages specialization in French and English and students from B.A. in English Teaching at the Foreign Language Department, University of El Salvador, semester I, 2017

Speaking is one of the most important skills in the process of learning a second language. The development of this skill is influenced by some factors. These factors play an important role in the development of the speaking skill, as the researchers could verify in this study. The aim of this study is to make a comparison and to investigate the aspects that make a difference in the English speaking proficiency between the 4th year students from the B.A. in Modern Languages specialization in French and English and students from the B.A. in English Teaching Option at the Foreign Language Department, of semester I, 2017. One of the objectives of this investigation is to know the level of the English speaking proficiency of the students from both majors because it is something that draws attention so as to wonder what major has better oral English performance. To clarify that doubt, this research shows the levels reached by the students. To carry out this study, it is necessary to make use of a mixed research (qualitative and quantitative) and a descriptive study since the main aim is to analyze the oral performance between two groups of students and then to show some characteristics that make one group of students better in front the other. The analysis of the data shows the results obtained from oral interviews and surveys, confirming with the final results the English speaking level of the 4th year students from both majors.

Communicating by using a second or third language enable people to be more competent for the diversity of challenges found in everyday life. This characteristic enhances people to establish a better relationship with other people. It is not only what people say, but also the way they say it what can make them more reliable and skilled at the moment of performing a task, or encountering a situation in which the use of the mother tongue is not allowed. This research tries to set the difference in fluency among both majors by questioning and reviewing the dedication consecrated to learn a second language. In order to gather the data, some placement tests and interviews were assigned and performed to evaluate the knowledge that students have acquired through the years of study. The information stored in their brains is clearly related to the fluency at the moment of communicating an idea since a person without enough vocabulary would not be able to produce a clear speech. However, there are some blind spots that need to be covered in both majors but the main one is how to make students be aware about their speaking progress since there is a lack of consistency at the moment of delivering a message.

A description of the humanitarian Sense of the students of the 5th year of The School of Arts and Social Sciences of the University of El Salvador seen through the student's participation in Social Programs during the first Semester 2018”. The students of the fifth year of The School of Arts and Social Sciences are expected to follow the humanitarian approach of the school in order to contribute to the resolution of the current social problems by participating in humanitarian activities in favor of the development of Salvadorans in general. Therefore, the purpose of this research work was: to describe how students of the School of Arts and Social Sciences get involved in humanitarian programs during their studies. A survey was conducted to collect the necessary information; a questionnaire containing open and close-ended questions about the participation of students in humanitarian projects, and factors that might being enhance a committed way of thinking in pro of the developing of the society was used . The obtained results provided the researchers with information about what the main factors that influence the students’ humanitarian behavior are: political, religious, familial, or/and the philosophy of the University. At the same time, the results also showed the humanitarian activities in which students have been involved during their studies, and how this participation has benefited or affected them in their professional and personal life. Besides, the research makes reference to the factors that might be hindering the student’s participation. The School of Arts and Social Sciences of the University of El Salvador can use the results of this research to evaluate the current participation in humanitarian projects of the students, and if the philosophical framework stated is being attained

The study was based on knowing and making a descriptive study of the options to do the community work of fifth-year students in the communication area from the Bachelor of Arts in modern Languages in semester I/2019 focusing on implementation of community work when they choose the communication specialization. The population of the study was based on the fifth-year students who developed their community work in Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages with specialization in French and English. The practitioners wanted to identify some of the problems and the level of satisfaction or in satisfaction they faced in the process. Besides, an interview was conducted to the students in order to get more specific information that helped and facilitated to practitioners to gather deeper information about the research topic. The method applied in this research was the mixed method (qualitative and quantitative approaches). The outcome of the study indicated the feeling and experiences obtained in the students during the process of their community work. In order to implement a previous and good orientation for the students of the Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages Specialty in English and French at the beginning of the major that one may provide guiding to the students when choosing one of the two specializations.
A descriptive study of the results obtained in blended-learning intensive english Courses in the language skills development area at the Department of Foreign Languages of the University of El Salvador during the Year 2014

During the past two years, a blended-learning program using Moodle and Facebook social media, has been implemented through the use of a virtual learning platform in a number of English courses in the Foreign Languages Department. This virtual platform has been mostly used to provide virtual access to materials and other information resources to students registered in these courses. This action has been taken mainly in an effort to overcome the lack of space for the growing population of the Department. It is essential that the impact and repercussions of the blended-learning program implementation through the application of this virtual learning platform (Moodle) be studied and surveyed to make a diagnosis of the practicality of such implementation. This research diagnoses opinions of three sectors (professors, students and graduates) on a needed curricular update of the Modern Languages major through an exploratory study of the current academic plan, and it is grounded on curriculum design theories and models. Towards that end, surveys and interviews, as part of a mixed research approach, will be used to gather and, afterwards, analyze data which will unveil results leading to potential curricular changes. In short, expected latest and freshest research results might well serve the purpose of a curricular update which is undoubtedly needed after 18 years of this study plan approval (Modern Languages study plan was approved in 2002)

This research focused on the Spanish translation of the classic English literary text Animal Farm, written by George Orwell in 1945 and translated by Rafael Abella in 2006. The main concern of this study was related to the issue of equivalence between the two texts, taking into consideration the textual and intertextual evidence of the texts involved. Therefore, this study adopted the research approach of discourse analysis based on the three dimensions by Alonso (1998): informational, structural, and social. The researchers used the descriptive qualitative method to describe the phenomena objectively. The data was collected by reading and highlighting words, phrases, and sentences to analyze the equivalence between the source text and the target text.

The Empower Project emerged as an initiative from the Foreign Language Department at the University of El Salvador along with the United States Embassy in El Salvador. This project is based on English teaching to students from public high schools inside the metropolitan area in San Salvador. The embassy funded this program with $50,000 and all the work of the teachers who taught classes is valuated at approximately $160,000. This project has chosen 400 high school students who come from 12 different public institutions. At this moment there are 9 public institutions that functions as headquarter. The 400 students are divided in groups of 20 students each and they get English book free of charge. Besides, each institution has received resources such as: Laptops, CD players, Multimedia projector and a mini amplifier for each group of class they have.

Through the years, the English language has become more and more popular and it is one of the most useful languages to learn around the world. There are simply huge amounts of literature and writings in the English language. It is also the standard language for world communication, especially in the fields of science, business, information technology and economy. Besides being an incredibly useful language to learn for business, the English language also opens the speaker up to a massive amount of culture, such as cinema, theatre, and music. Learning the English language will enable people to travel the world over, and to be understood by the local people who live there, enriching their travelling experience. Parting from that fact, the Foreign Language Department recognizes importance of this language and in its social labor seeks on projects that will generate an impact in the society and the culture as well. In this case, it seeks to impact students from the Foreign Language Department at the University Of El Salvador (UES), and the students from public high schools in the metropolitan area of San Salvador trough a project called EMPOWER. This project consists on teaching English to students from public high schools that had the desire not only of learning English, but also to continue studying at university level. This project started on March 17th, 2014 thanks to a partnership with the Foreign Language Department at The University of El Salvador, the United States Embassy in El Salvador, Pro-lingua Institute and Macmillan Publishers. By bringing the opportunity to teach English to the students from the high schools, the university students will improve their language skills and at the same time they will make either their professional teaching practices or it will be taken as their internship. As well, the high school students will learn in an intensive and advanced way the English language in order to bring them the opportunity to apply for a job after the project finishes

This research work is aimed at raising awareness and inform about the need to implement a specialization framework addressed to students of the Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages: Specialization in French and English of the Foreign Language Department of the School of Arts and Sciences of the University of El Salvador, specifically those who choose the Public Relations track. In addition, the research team presents a curricular proposal that contains an appropriate academic load to the specialization. Taking into consideration the current economic situation of El Salvador and the challenges that globalization brings, Entrepreneurship has been considered as an option with great benefits and opportunities that foster spaces of grow as an alternative of life for future professionals. The research team studied the current Public Relations track graduates’ situation and the problems they are facing in the labor market due to the need for an academic restructuring of the track of Public Relations, which has not been modified since its creation in 2002. It would be advantageous for the students to have the option of being able to choose between the carrying out of a specialization that could generate more learning through experience, adequate preparation, and specialization in an area that allows graduates to find a means of economic growth for their families or the elaboration of the research work.

This research study presents valuable information about a proposal for using short films as authentic material to improve oral skill of B1 level students during the English learning process in EFL classes through video guides at the Foreign Language Department at the University of El Salvador in semester I-2016. At the same time, it encompasses information about important findings of previous studies related to the importance of the use of short films activities in English as a foreign language (EFL) courses. It also presents the information about how to improve such skills. This work is divided into eight chapters: Chapter number one includes with the research design, and it features sections in which the researchers clearly demonstrate the different issues students are having regarding the oral skill which is, in this case, the description of the problem and also the objectives that the research team agreed to accomplish. Finally, the justification demonstrates why this research study is worth carrying it out and the research questions stated by the team. Chapter number two presents the theoretical framework which makes this work reliable and trustful. It provides grounded information about the usage of short films and how it can be helpful to improve oral skills. Besides, this part reveals that English students from the Foreign Language Department at the University of El Salvador, hardly ever have speaking and listening activities in their classes, it also states the importance of using authentic material during the English learning process. Chapter three includes about the Methodological Design which features the methodology and type of study; it also presents the research design used to carry out the research and the different data collection instruments and techniques that were used to obtain consistent information of the sample of study; finally, the operationalization of data. Chapter number four shows the data analysis. It is based on all the observation process to obtain information about the use of short films during an English class at Instituto Técnico Centroamericano, ITCA; the data, which was obtained by having interviewed g some teachers to later analyze all the information that was gathered and compared with the grounded theory presented by the research team. Finally, Chapter five and Chapter number six, provides valuable conclusions and recommendations of the phenomenon of study. In addition, Chapter VII presents the grounded information and reliable collected by the research team in order to accomplish this investigation. Chapter VIII includes the appendices in which readers will find the questionnaires and some other documents that were very valuable to succeed with this investigation.

Technology has been a very important role in education, many techniques has been developed to support learning process. One of the methodologies that has been used in last years is b-learning, which is a form of education that combines face-to-face classroom methods with computer-mediated activities. B-learning proposes an alternative for innumerable people that for some reason are no able to assist face to face classes in universities or schools regularly. In the Foreign Language Department of the University of El Salvador, this method would not only be the solution for the students that cannot attend traditional classes every day, but this could be the answer to solve the overpopulation, a problem which the department deal with, since this is one of the biggest departments of the whole University of El Salvador and one of the biggest issues is the quantity of students, which create the little room for students, insufficient teaching stuff and overcrowded courses. This research is oriented to describe characteristic and advantages of b-learning methodology implementation in the Foreign Language Department at the University of El Salvador documenting the process of application as well as its benefits and shortcomings using this methodology to inform to all the protagonists, the research provides results that can help as a backup for future development of a full electronic distance methodology in the department.

This report highlights the advantages of virtual environments and technological tools in teaching foreign languages in the modern educational system of the Specialization Courses at the University of El Salvador's main campus. It aims to motivate and pique the interest of readers in using modern technologies for teaching and learning purposes. It demonstrates how Learning Management Systems play the role of digital classrooms, providing opportunities for students and teachers to interact with international communities beyond local institutions. This report also provides information on how to teach English as a foreign language using digital tools such as podcasts, online gaming, and oral presentations to engage students in a fun and exciting learning experience. Additionally, it describes the process of designing a website for teaching and learning purposes and its use in a virtual class for ESL students. This paper briefly discusses the history of virtual education to demonstrate the important factors that influenced the creation and development of technological tools and systems for teaching English as a foreign language. By leveraging technology and virtual environments, students and teachers can improve their language skills and connect with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Finally, this work serves as a valuable resource for anyone interested in modern language education and the potential benefits of using virtual environments and technological tools for teaching and learning foreign languages. With the help of these tools, language teachers can create an immersive and interactive learning experience for students that facilitates their language acquisition and enhances their cultural awareness

Desde el momento que un niño inicia los estudios de educación primaria, básica y hasta el momento que es un joven y finaliza los estudios de bachillerato, es muy importante tener claras sus motivaciones y expectativas tanto socioeconómicas como académicas, ya que al decidir continuar los estudios superiores le facilitará conocer el perfil de la carrera que elegirá. También la universidad o institución en la cual desarrollará estos estudios tendrá un rol muy importante, ya que formará parte de los conocimientos que adquirirá, y al finalizar los estudios el título que obtendrá, sin embargo para llegar a este proceso y elegir la carrera que le permitirá en el futuro desarrollarse como profesional, influyeron muchas entidades tales como círculos familiares y de amigos, medios de comunicación, agrupaciones políticas y religiosas y hasta el sistema educativo y el entorno social en el que vive. El Departamento de Idiomas Extranjeros de la Universidad de El Salvador, desde unos años hasta la fecha ha experimentado un incremento en su población estudiantil y entre sus carreras la Licenciatura en Lenguas Modernas: especialidad en Francés e Inglés, es una de las más elegidas por los jóvenes bachilleres mostrando así un tema de interés a investigar.
An analysis of the writing skill difficulties of the English Composition I students at the Foreign Language Department of the University of El Salvador

Many students have learned in high school to camouflage their lack of reading and writing skills, so it is often difficult for teachers to identify their weaknesses until students hand in papers or take exams. Then writing deficiencies are obvious. For this reason, it is important to say that academic writing involves many requirements that students must put into practice to avoid difficulties and complications at the moment of writing essays or report papers. Besides, not only self-strategies influence students’ performance, but also the effectiveness of the methods and techniques that teachers apply in their English Composition courses. Each method is useful with some students but fails with others, so writing needs to persist and teachers must take into account other strategies if they want their students to develop effective writing skills. Therefore, students and teachers must work together as a team. If students want to improve their writing skills, only in this way they will have good results and they will notice the difference in their compositions.

This research paper provides the information of the procedure followed and findings of a research study of Modern Languages students’ perceptions of the employability skills developed in their major and the expected destinations to perform those skills. This paper first presents all the parts that compose the Statement of the problem like: the Description of the problem, the General and Specific Objectives that this research intends to reach, the Research Questions, the Delimitation of the problem, and the Justification that refers to the explanation of the purpose of the study, then the report highlights key definitions and information in the Theoretical Framework, concerning the employability skills with particular reference to understand the core of this topic and goes on to present information about the Offshore Business Service Industry in El Salvador that groups the main enterprises offering employment positions for Modern Languages students, and finally, this same part contains information about the up-to-date practices in the area of foreign languages and relevant information about the major in Modern Languages at the University of El Salvador (UES).
An overview of students-teacher face to face and asynchronous Interaction in the Conversation II Course of the English Teaching Major from the Distance Learning Program of the University of El Salvador, Semester I, 2017

This study is the result of an exploratory study carried out with students enrolled in the English Conversation II course of the English Teaching Major from the Distance Learning Program of the University of El Salvador, during the first semester, 2017. The research was developed following a qualitative-quantitative methodology with the purpose of describing teacher-students interactions during the Conversation II course. Among the most noticeable findings in the data analysis chapter, two of the highlighted factors are: the feedback that is being provided in the distance learning modality is mostly evaluative, and some of the students seem to be satisfied with the type of feedback that is being provided. Based on the aspects stated, tutors are advised to remember the importance of corrective feedback and its implementation whenever it is possible. And as a general suggestion, a call is made to the authorities of this Department to analyze and provide solutions to one problematic situation related to the ability of the students to move from their home to the main campus of the University of El Salvador.

A lo largo de los años la violencia ha sido una problemática que ha estado latente en el país, por lo cual muchos gobiernos de diferentes ideologías han sugerido formas de ir erradicándola, tarea que no ha sido nada fácil, porque a pesar de que se ha pretendido conciliar e incluso usar medidas más drásticas como, por ejemplo, el Plan Mano Dura, está sigue latente e quizás incrementa aún más. Los medios de comunicación son los principales comunicadores de lo que sucede a diario en el país, por lo cual se ha querido realizar una investigación basada en el análisis de discurso y el tratamiento informativo que la prensa escrita, específicamente El Diario de Hoy, realiza en la sección de editoriales y en el tema de violencia; para lo cual se hace una comparación de las publicaciones de los años 2015 y 2016, teniendo como objetivo el análisis del discurso del contenido de los editoriales y la determinación de las técnicas que este medio de comunicación utiliza al momento de tratar la información. La metodología utilizada, debido a que es una investigación cualitativa, comprendió la utilización del paradigma fenomenológico, el cual se caracteriza por prestar atención a todos los aspectos de la realidad comunicacional, sin dejar de lado a priori ninguno fuera de su consideración, el cual utiliza las técnicas de análisis del contenido realizando dentro de este un análisis estructural. Utilizando estas técnicas de análisis y recolección de información se cumplieron los objetivos, y se plantearon datos que sustentan y responden a las interrogantes que desde un principio se generaron, buscando crear un marco de soluciones para dicha problemática y a la vez abrir puertas a futuras investigaciones.
