The assumption that led to this research study was that the EFL methodology applied in the Intensive Basic English Courses hinders the development of the language skills. To collect the information, the researchers administered a semi-structured interview to fifteen English teachers in the field of EFL methodology in order to answer the questions: What are the most suitable EFL methodological procedures to balance the development of the language skills in basic English students? and in what manner do appropriate methodological procedures help basic English students to develop the four macro skills equally and naturally?. Through a meticulous analysis and interpretation of the data, the researchers found out that according to the EFL teachers in the field of methodology one of the most useful methods to develop the language skills is the Direct Method. Therefore, the aim of this research study is to find out in what manner students’ low level of English affects them in their achievement when they take English Grammar I, English Pronunciation, English Composition I, Didactics of the English Language I, and Introductions to Linguistics. In addition, it intended to answer the research questions: How does students’ low level of English affect their progress when they take English Grammar I, Pronunciation I, English Composition I, and Didactics of the English Language I?, What are the effects in students’ learning progress when they take English Grammar I, English Pronunciation, English Composition I, and Didactics of the English Language I?, In what manner do these effects impinge upon students’ learning?, and How should the 2002 Curriculum be reorganized to fulfill students’ needs? The method applied by the researchers was the qualitative descriptive method, and the instruments administered to gather the data were three different questionnaires for students, one interview for each of the target subject teachers, one interview for the Coordinator of the Licenciatura en Idioma Inglés-Opción Enseñanza at the Main Campus, and two checklists for Didactics and Compositions classes.Item Analysis of the Implementation of the COMPITE program in the headquarters of Metapán, Juayua, Acajutla, Santa Tecla, San Marcos, and La Unión(2007-05-14) López Quintana, Cesar Antonio; Martínez Lima, Carlos Roberto; Olivar Quezada, Lilian Maricarmen; Zelaya Colon, Simón Alexander; Pérez Mendoza, Edgar AmilcarThis research study dealt with the analysis of the compite program implementation in the headquarters of Metapán, Juayúa, Acajutla, Santa Tecla, San Marcos and La Union. The research question that led this research study was “In what way is the implementation of the compite program being carried out in order to meet the goals of the 202 educational plan?” The method applied by the researchers was the qualitative research with the use of a needs assessment to know the assets and liabilities of the COMPITE program implementation. The sources of information used in this study were three interviews, a self-assessment and a checklist. The researchers selected a target population of six headquarters coordinators, twelve teachers, and the general coordinator of the program to administer the instruments. The data gathered from the interviews were analyzed using the Krippendorf content analysis. Through the needs assessment, the researchers found out that the COMPITE program had coordination and communication problems, since its components have not been implemented effectively leading to students’ poor attendance and less teachers’ involvement in the implementation of the program. Furthermore, the researchers observed that teachers from Centro Cultural Salvadoreño do a very good job and they use all the resources that the COMPITE document establishes. This means, that a program can be successful with the appropriate resources and teachers. The only aspect that could not be analyzed was the opinion of the general coordinator, since it was impossible to interview her.Item The Effectiveness of Using Authentic Materials to Enhance Intensive Intermediate English I students’ Communicative Competence(2008-01-01) Herrera Huezo, Karla Elizabeth; López Aquino, Yesenia Beatriz; Salazar López, Cristina Dolores; Escalante, Juan AntonioThe purpose of this experimental study was to find out the effectiveness of implementing authentic materials to enhance IIE-I students’ communicative competence of Licenciatura en Idioma Inglés Opción Enseñanza at the Western Multidisciplinary Campus. The study started with the administration of an oral pretest made up of three parts: an impromptu speech, a role play, and an oral interview for both the control and the experimental group. Then the treated students were exposed to authentic materials aimed at improving their communicative competence in twenty four sessions developed in two months. After the intervention, the researchers administered an oral posttest to both groups to identify whether the treatment worked and to compare the groups’ results. Such results were also analyzed using the T-Test to verify if the difference obtained in the final average of the tests was significant. The T-test outcomes showed that even though there was a difference in the groups’ scores, it was not enough to assert that the implementation of authentic materials enhances students’ communicative competence.Item A proposal to incorporate the teaching of English in public elementary school levels in El Salvador(2009-12-01) Monterroza Avalos, Evelin Natali; Díaz Avalos, Jonathan Leonel; García Rivas, Carmina Yecenia; Gómez Martínez, José Roberto; Landaverde Figueroa, Susi Licet; Linares de Sermeño, Guadalupe DelurdyThis research study focuses on the problems and the effects on seventh graders caused by the poor teaching of English at public elementary school levels. This work presents the results of a whole research process to evaluate the necessity to incorporate the teaching of English in Salvadorian public elementary schools to help junior high school students overcome their English learning deficiencies.In order to find out information about the previously mentioned situation, researchers chose different schools of the urban area of Santa Ana where researchers observed and studied different variables concerning seventh graders and seventh grade teachers. Besides studying the variables related to the students, researchers also evaluated the current junior high school English teaching curriculum being used for teaching English to junior high school students.Item EFL methodological procedures to cope with seventh, eighth and ninth graders mixed- ability classes at Colegio Salesiano San José in Santa Ana in the year 2009(2009-12-01) Cerna Solís, Susana Beatriz; Cruz Portillo, Karla Beatriz; González Díaz, Ruth Cristina; Martínez Molina, Yaneth Idalia; Escalante, Juan AntonioThis quantitative study focuses on EFL Methodological Procedures to cope with seventh, eighth and ninth graders mixed-ability classes at Colegio Salesiano San José in Santa Ana in the year 2009. The aim of this study was to find out what techniques can be applied in the English classroom to cope with mixed-ability in seventh, eighth and ninth graders. The study started with a pre-observation at Colegio Salesiano San José to realize that the problem existed. Then, a written test was applied to the students to know their background of the English language. After that, students attended seven weeks of free English courses in which the researchers used peer tutoring, group work techniques and varied material focused on listening and writing skills. After the course finished, the researchers applied an exit test to students to compare the students’ performance after the techniques were applied. Then a questionnaire was administered to the students to know their opinion about the courses. Finally, an observation checklist was used by the researchers to collect data about students’ performance in their daily classes. However, the data obtained at the end of the post observation were not enough to prove that peer tutoring and group work techniques may reduce the phenomenon of mixed-ability in the English class.Item The effectiveness of using adequate methods, techniques, and resources to teach true beginners of seventh grade at Centro Escolar Tomás Medina 10421 in the city of Santa Ana in the year 2009(2009-12-01) Fuentes Góchez, Claudia Vanessa; Grande Rodríguez, Nurian Lizbeth Arabella; Morán Clavel, Mayra Griselda; Ramírez Elías, Sara Noemy; Escalante, Juan AntonioThe purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of using adequate methods, techniques, and resources to teach English as a foreign language to true beginners of seventh grade at Centro Escolar Tomás Medina 10421 in the city of Santa Ana in the year 2009. The unit of study consisted of 39 students who were taking the English subject for the first time, but at the end of the project the unit of study became 35 students because of dropout.Item The Effects of the Methodology used in the Language Department of the University of El Salvador Western Multidisciplinary Campus on Advanced English II students’ Oral Accuracy, semester I, 2010(2010-08-01) Ramos Morales, Oswaldo Alexander; Villeda de Trigueros, Roxana LeonorThe aim of this investigation was to explain the effects of the methodology used by Advanced English II teacher of the University of El Salvador Western Multidisciplinary Campus on Advanced English II students’ oral accuracy. The participants for this investigation were four Advanced English II students who were observed and interviewed during the investigation. For this investigation three data collection instruments were used: observation guide, checklist and semi-structured interview guide. These instruments were useful to gather information regarding the two variables of the investigation: 1) Methodology used by Advanced English II teachers and 2) Advanced English II students’ oral accuracy. Since this is a qualitative research, Nvivo 7 was used to categorize the information from the three sources to be analyzed thoroughly. After the analysis of the information, a body of conclusions and recommendations were built up. According to ELT experts such as Penny Ur (N.D.), Chaunren Ke (1995) and Sasson (2007), the implementation of the communicative approach undermines one important dimension of the English language which is accuracy. In the same sense, in this investigation, Advanced English II students also show high levels of inaccuracy in their oral production. That is why the body of recommendations was based on what these experts recommends doing when students are immersed in programs which the Communicative Approach is implemented.
